Why Change?

January 15, 2018 By Tom Mungavan Leave a Comment

January is the top month for people focusing on all the ways they fall short.  We create a list of resolutions, determined to do better. If we could just be a little more of the good stuff and a little less of the bad stuff, we would be happy. We could feel good about ourselves.  Unfortunately, I cannot recall a single year when that actually happened.  So why change?

I am not against change. I am against blind change.  Personal change is not easy. It is important to be really clear with yourself why you want to make a specific change. What is the benefit, and is it worth it? Don’t waste change energy on things that are really not important to you, even if someone else thinks it is important. Focus on one thing, or at most three things, you want to change. List simple steps you can do daily to support your objective. Use affirmations to visualize yourself successfully doing the new behavior habitually. Imagine the benefit you will be receiving from the new behavior. The mind can absorb clear visualization almost like doing the real thing.

As you work on building new habits … you will fail at times. That is normal. Do not beat yourself up for falling short. Simply say to yourself, “Next time I will … (the positive new behavior)” and move on.  You probably do not need a checklist to brush your teeth in the morning because you think of yourself as someone who brushes their teeth.  When you use the “Next time I will …” phrase with your affirmations, you are training your brain to place the new behavior next to your toothbrush. When it becomes ingrained in your self- view, the new behavior will be naturally yours.

The Sport of Travel

January 9, 2018 By Tom Mungavan Leave a Comment

Are you a frequent traveler for business? Think of your trips like preparing to participate in a sporting event.

Every trip is a chance to fail or succeed. Much of success is based on how you think and prepare. Like participation in a sporting event, you need to be thinking clearly … and physically prepare. Use a “game-day” process for travel that minimizes your stress and maximizes your energy. Things to consider for your process:

  1. Make sure your presentation or meeting message is optimal and you are ready to deliver it powerfully. Feel good about going.
  2. Have full backups for your material and equipment. Thumb drives and presentations stored on the cloud may allow recovery if your laptop does not work.
  3. For key meetings or presentations, have a backup flight plan (schedule an alternate flight plan if the meeting/presentation is a big one).
  4. Pack systematically. Maintain a packed bag for all but what is unique for the trip.
  5. Pack one bag to check and another on the plane. Dress for the flight so you would not be embarrassed if your bag does not make it in time.
  6. Be prepared to dress up or down if you are not certain of the standards at the meeting.
  7. Know the weather expectations (and plan for them to be wrong).
  8. Take care of yourself physically. Get sleep, meditation and exercise that works for you. Consider allowing time for adjustment with multiple time zones.
  9. Get to the airport early enough to give yourself a margin of error and a chance to relax.
  10. Use express airport services like CLEAR and TSApre to save time and hassle.
  11. Consider relaxation on the flight. Airlines drop the oxygen by half so it makes it harder to concentrate anyway. Save your energy for the “big game”.
  12. Know where you will sleep, and how you will get there. I use a hotel chain I know is consistent, and where I am an elite member.
  13. Know exactly where the meeting is and who to make contact with on site (exchange mobile numbers).
  14. Breath to keep centered and focused on your purpose for the presentation or meeting.
  15. Reach your goal – win the game!

There are many parallels between business and sports. That is why so many business people use sports analogies to simplify concepts and make them more tangible.  We have several examples in our The Sport of Business video series.
