Executive Presence Without Selling Out

June 3, 2025 By Tom Mungavan Leave a Comment

Executive Presence and Selling Yourself

Why do some people seem to get all the credit, even when they’re doing less? How do you get noticed without being a “suck-up”

If you’ve ever watched a colleague charm their way into the spotlight and thought, “Seriously?”—you’re not alone. Many professionals shy away from self-promotion for a straightforward reason: we don’t want to seem fake.

We’ve all seen the over-the-top flattery, the loud self-congratulations, the performative politicking. And we want no part of it.

But here’s the hard truth: your work does not speak for itself. A brown paper bag on the grocery shelf with wonderful contents will not compare well to a well-designed package that describes the value of its less worthy contents.

In over 35 years of coaching high-talent professionals, I’ve seen one consistent blind spot—leaders who assume that effort and results will naturally be noticed. Unfortunately, that’s a myth. People are too busy, distracted, and often unaware of what you’re achieving.

That’s why learning how to promote yourself authentically—with executive presence—isn’t just a nice skill. It’s a leadership imperative to help you and the team you lead.

Here’s how we coach our clients at Change Masters to get noticed without selling out:

1. Frame your value around what the business cares about.

Want to catch leadership’s attention? Speak their language. Share your progress through three high-value lenses:

  • Driving business results

  • Creating breakthrough innovations

  • Elevating people to the next level

This clarity helps you talk about your contributions in a relevant way, not self-serving.

2. If they don’t know you did it, it’s like you didn’t do it.

Great ideas don’t sell themselves. You need to socialize your work. Think of your accomplishments like a great product: if it’s collecting dust in the back of the store, no one’s buying.

Put your insights into circulation. Share progress with key stakeholders. Don’t let discomfort hold you back—let clarity and value guide you.

3. Highlight what’s uniquely you—briefly.

When you talk about what you’ve done, don’t overexplain. Just hook them with one compelling detail or angle that reveals your thinking. As one of our clients, a Dutch engineer, put it:

“Take them by the hand and give one line of background—not the history of the world.”

It worked. He became known for concise insights and confident presence.

The bottom line:
If you did it—and you can say it with clarity and intention—you’re not bragging.
You’re leading.

If senior leaders do not know what you can do for the company, they will lose, and you will lose. Executive presence starts with making your value visible.
