Dramatic change is ahead

Over the next decade, online learning will dramatically change the education model and the business model for most organizations. Youtube.com was established in 2005 and now is the second highest traffic website in the world. Younger generations are not only using the site for entertainment, but for learning and communication. There are many other sites providing large volumes of video information and training. The rate is accelerating dramatically.

According to Wikipedia, Khan Academy is a non-profit educational website created in 2006 by educator Salman Khan, a graduate of MIT and Harvard Business School. The stated mission is to provide “a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere.” It all started with Khan wanting to help one of his relatives with calculus. Less than ten years later it is changing the world.

The website features thousands of educational resources, including a personalized learning dashboard, over 100,000 exercise problems, and over 4000 micro lectures via video tutorials stored on YouTube teaching mathematics, history, healthcare, medicine, finance, physics, general chemistry, biology, astronomy, economics, cosmology, organic chemistry, American civics, art history, macroeconomics, microeconomics, and computer science. All resources are available for free to anyone around the world. Khan Academy reaches about 10,000,000 students per month and has delivered over 300,000,000 lessons.

Similar opportunities will be available to the businesses that look ahead.

Note that I quoted Wikipedia which eliminated the encyclopedia book business. Colleges and businesses will need to dramatically adapt to the new technology and the younger workers whose life experience is steeped in video training.  The technology is moving very fast and it is hard to imagine ten years in the future. The destination is not clear, but the direction is clear.

Change Masters has always used video-recording in our 25+ years of business. We started exploring and experimenting with on-line video and videoconferencing over five years ago.  I saw great potential. The reality of the results have far exceeded my expectations.
